Can I make emergency calls with Digital Voice?

Last updated: 16 March 2026

Yes. You can still make emergency calls using Digital Voice. However, because the service relies on your broadband connection and electricity, it may not work during a power cut unless you have an alternative power source.

How emergency calls work with Digital Voice
Digital Voice allows you to make calls using your broadband connection instead of the traditional telephone network.

This means your phone service depends on equipment in your home, including:

  • Your broadband router
  • Your fibre or broadband connection
  • Your phone handset or adapter

All of this equipment requires electricity to operate.

What happens during a power cut?
If there is a power cut and your equipment loses power, your Digital Voice service will stop working.

This means you would not be able to make calls, including calls to 999 or 112, using your home phone during the outage.

How to make emergency calls if your phone is not working
We recommend that customers keep an alternative way to contact emergency services, such as:

  • A mobile phone with signal and battery
  • Battery backup equipment for your router and broadband equipment
