Keeping our flock fit and flying

Josh G | Social Media & Content Lead

Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week a chance to get our team talking about a topic close to our collective hearts here at Cuckoo.

This year's theme was " moving for our mental health ." And because we needed an ‘icebreaker’ we set our team the challenge of putting in enough steps during the week to collectively walk from our Exeter office to the North Pole 🐧 (more on that later).

United for mental health

At Cuckoo, one of our core values is We Are United, which encourages a sense of belonging, respect and collaboration. Being 'United' also means we look after each other and make Cuckoo the most supportive environment it can be.

And, when it comes to supporting our team's mental health we put our money where our beaks are to keep our flock fit and flying. From 30 days holiday, enhanced family leave, healthcare options and employee assistance programmes, we want our team to be at their happiest and most productive; and to keep us on track we run regular ‘Flock Check’ engagement surveys.

The importance of moving 🚶‍♂️

With so many of our team working remotely, movement is doubly important. But finding time to stay active throughout the day can be tough. So, to encourage healthy habits throughout the Flock our Health, Safety, & Wellbeing Manager, Helen, hosted a webinar with members of our Executive Team to find out how they make time for movement.

Teams meeting

Here’s what we learnt:

Physical and mental health are intrinsically linked

Throughout my life – heartbreak, big job decisions, bad news, grief - I always use being active to counter those things and help me have clarity of mind

But you need to go at your own pace

Start slow, build it up

And find time for exercise by setting boundaries and prioritising “you”

“I try to prioritise myself first every morning, so if the day runs away, the day runs away and I feel like I’ve done something”

You can also make steps to prioritise your teams’ wellbeing in the workplace

We try and look after people’s mental health with wellbeing walks, going out for 5 minutes and getting fresh air and being refreshed”

Technology can help.

We recently picked our six favourite apps for mind, body and soul. And it’s just the tip of the wellness tech iceberg

So did we reach the North Pole?

🥁Drumroll please….

Well, in true Cuckoo fashion we knew this was a big challenge. Our team put their best feet forward clocking an eye-watering 3,390,435 steps. Although we didn't reach the North Pole,. We've travelled from Exeter to countries far and wide including Finland, Norway and beyond
