8 top tips to spring clean your broadband network

Josh G | Social Media & Content Lead

A new season of Death in Paradise, Easter eggs on supermarket shelves, and Mrs. Hinch cracking her knuckles... it can only mean one thing. Spring is coming.

But before you reach for the feather duster, remember it’s not just your skirting boards and cupboards that need a clear out. Give your broadband a little love too.

Here’s how to declutter, secure and make sure everything’s spick and span this year:

1. Remove devices from your router

Old phones. Forgotten smart plugs. Your ex’s iPad… Over time, your Wi-Fi network can get bogged down by devices you don’t use. Use the eero app to get rid of any unnecessary clingers. It’ll free up bandwidth for the devices you actually use, as well as improve your network security (because old devices don’t run the latest software, so can be more vulnerable to attacks).

2. Close tabs and tidy your browser

Thousands of windows open at the same time? We’re glad it’s not just us. A little declutter can do wonders for your computer system, though – so take a few mins to:

- Close unused tabs (as it hogs memory)

- Bookmark important pages for later

- Clear your browser cache and cookies

3. Update software and firmware

Just as you keep your home safe by locking windows and switching on the burglar alarm each night, it’s best to check your devices are totally safe every once in a while too. Try:

- Updating your router’s software

- Checking for updates on laptops, phones and tablets

- Updating smart home devices like doorbells, cameras and thermostats

4. Secure your network

Keep everything locked down by reviewing your network’s security settings. Here’s how to do it:

- Change your Wi-Fi password if it hasn’t been updated recently. Make it strong and unique.

- Enable WPA3 (the latest security for your Wi-Fi) on your eero router

- Use guest networks for visitors to keep your main network private

5. Declutter your devices

Just like clearing out a junk drawer, tidying up your files can make it easier to find what you’re looking for (and it also gives you that lovely ‘aaah’ feeling). Start by:

- Deleting apps and files you don’t use

- Organising your desktop and folders

- Running a virus scan to catch anything lurking in the background

6. Banish the buffer

A laggy Zoom call or stuttering movie? No thanks. Make sure your network’s working smoothly by:

- Connecting high-bandwidth devices, like smart TVs, directly to your router with an Ethernet cable

- Scheduling downtime for non-essential devices during peak usage times

7. Check your parental controls

Keep your little ones safe and sound online, all the time (not just in Spring, of course). Use the eero app to:

- Set schedules for internet access

- Block specific content or websites

- Monitor online activity for peace of mind

8. Time to reset

Finally, reboot that router. It’s a simple step, but it’ll have a big impact – clearing temporary glitches and making sure your network performs like a dream.   Just don't do it too often!

So that’s it. Have a little tidy. Install some software. Check and fine-tune. And in no time, you’ll have a network that’s clean, efficient and secure. Woohoo!
