Do I need a landline for full fibre broadband? 

Remember when landlines were the only way you could talk to someone in real-time? Sadly (or thankfully) the days of spending hours waiting by the phone for your crush to call feel like a bygone era – along with floppy disks, Gameboys and VCRs.  

We’ve obviously come a long way with technology – so it may surprise you that even today, loads of us still rely on landlines for broadband to work. That’s because more traditional, copper-based broadband setups still need to send a signal down your telephone line. 

But, as we’ve mentioned loads of times before – those copper-based connections aren’t very reliable. They break down far too easily, and their bandwidth just isn’t made for things like streaming, gaming or WFHing.  

Full fibre broadband is, though – which is why it’s the only kind of broadband we offer. The great news is you don’t need a landline to connect full fibre broadband at all. That’s because data is sent down those clever fibre optic cables, and not your phone line.  

And, even better - full fibre broadband without a phone line is probably cheaper than those traditional set-ups, too. 

Of course, if you’re in a rural area with sketchy mobile signal, or you simply prefer to use a landline, you might be wondering how you’ll make calls without it. But don’t worry – there are a few options. 

Soon, we’ll be adding Voice over IP, which means you can use Cuckoo broadband to make calls (watch this space). Or, you can use Wi-Fi calling with apps like WhatsApp, which means you’re using internet data to call instead of your usual minutes. Either way, you don’t have to worry about being able to call someone just because you don’t have a landline. 

Full fibre broadband gives you the option to hang up on landline connections, which means you don't have to pay for line rental.
